Bye bye Beirut.

After spending a few glorious days in Lebanon , it was with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to the land of my orgin, the land of my father. The only silver lining being that I was going to fly via Dubai straight to our holiday home in Umhlanga to spend Easter with my family.  Knowing this, it allowed me to shop for ingredients to prepare my Easter weekend table. On my final day, my chariot awaited (by chariot I mean my 1970 model Mercedes Benz taxi). My driver agreed to take me to ...

“Barbar ” Hamra Road , Beirut

The final leg of my journey brought me to Beirut, Lebanon - The land of my origin.  The city once called the Paris of the Middle East hosts some of the worlds best restaurants, cafe's and patisseries. Evidently this was not at the top of my list. I was in fact looking for street food; food that symbolised the heart and soul of this vibrant city. I hailed a taxi, explained my request and was answered within seconds with a single option: "Barbar" So Barbar it was... On route I racked my ...

When in Dubai: EAT

My return to Dubai brought with it the opportunity to settle some unfinished business.  I refused to to leave this glorious gastronomic paradise without doing the following: Firstly  breakfast at Ladur'ee situated on the breathtaking Dubai Marina. Eggs Benedict to start, Croissants: plain , chocolate and pistachio to follow and to end freshly baked baguettes to enjoy with a selection of french cheeses. With no room left for their famous macarons or tarts I paid the bill and left satisfied....

Khasab: The Norway of Arabia

As I sit on the deck of my ship writing, I stare out into the distance at an oasis of date palms gently bellowing in the wind. Khasab, Oman: a port of many charms and one in particular being the famous "Fjords". My adventure today began onboard a dhow (An ancient wooden sea vessel) , which carried me across the ocean to witness one of earths magnificent wonders. The Fjords of Oman known as the Norway of Arabia, spread vastly along the coastline of this majestic country. Norway's green ...

Mystical Muscat – The empire of Saltans

I knew my visit to Muscat was going to be a short one as we were only docked for a couple of hours, but I had no idea how much this  fascinating port had to offer. After disembarkation I hurried to find the closest taxi and was met with a sea of of opportunities . I picked my driver and negotiations began. Once a price was agreed upon I realised that we were no longer in the EUA and I had the incorrect currency, Not a problem insisted my driver ,"we go to ATM" ( obviously this happens often). ...

Port Khor Fakkan

Greetings form Al Fujirh! If you are wondering where on earth I am, you are not alone. Khor Fakkan forms part of the United Arab Emirates and is situated on the East Side of the Persian Gulf & having never heard of this minute location I was eager to explore it. I was awoken to the sounds of the ship docking in the port,  drawing back the curtain revealed a tiny port reminiscent of something out of an old Indiana Jones movie, this made it all the more intriguing. I boarded the ...
