Scrolling through my instagram account, I picked up on a follower that intrigued me. A brave young lady , and I mean BRAVE had captivated my interest with her ice cream Macaron sandwiches. Anybody who has ever attempted macarons will understand, when making these tiny mouthfuls of delight they can drive a sane person mad, just when you think you have mastered the technique they come back to bite you, for what is left is usually a tray of what you had hoped to be perfect French pâtisserie at its finest, instead turned out to be shattered domes of dismay, pretty much like your self esteem at that moment.
Sugarlicious create the most mouthwatering Macaron ice- cream sandwiches. From the advertising to the packaging to the final product , precision and perfection reign supreme. Being a Durban based organisation I had to wait patiently for my Macaron fix, its was to my joy that they advertised, they would be popping up for a weekend in Johannesburg, but to my dismay, they sold out almost immediately on opening. Left disappointed but ever more eager I planned a long weekend to Uhmlanga to track down these elusive delights. I contacted the owner Zakeeya Mitha and she was kind enough to prepare for me a sample box of her product.
Zakeeya , a pâtisserie student from Umhlanga has mastered the technique. When asked what motivated her to create her product she answered “I have always loved eating and making things to eat, I initially started baking as a business in 2007 as a pass time, once I found my feet with Macarons (pun intended) I decided to focus on them.” She too admitted that it takes time and dedication to achieve the perfect Macaron. Its a tale of trial and error until you get the knack. It was after seeing a picture of an ice cream Macaron that she attempted making the creation for herself.
I questioned Zakeeya about baking at the coast as I myself find it difficult to adjust my own basic recipes to the altitude and humidity, she agreed that it did pose a challenge but then joked saying “on the plus side the views are stunning and make up for it”. I say “brave and talented young lady!”
I chose the right moment, removed the packaging to reveal a box of gems. Neat, elegant ,perfect this lady knows her stuff. Like a kid in a candy store I began sampling . Pure bliss. The wait was worth it.
Vivid colours paired together created a kaleidoscope leaving me with the dilemma of which to try first. I opted for the chocolate and wasn’t disappointed. Crisp , chewy , sweet followed with the cold sensation of creamy ice cream, somethings are just meant to be together. Not wanting to ,but feeling guilty I shared the box with family and friends. Moments of silence only broken by the odd “yum” and “OMG” was all that was muttered as they devoured my stash of baking magic.
If you are a macaron lover and have a soft spot for ice cream , then this is for you.
